Ganassi speaks out on Franchitti and ...
Racing series GRANDAM IRL NASCAR
Date 2007-09-23 (Dover, DE)
By Joe Jennings - Motorsport.com
"The background of open-wheel drivers does not represent a free pass to NASCAR and the Chase," car owner Chip Ganassi said prior to Sunday's Dodge Dealers 400 at Dover International Speedway. "The court is still out whether open-wheel drivers are qualified to be here or not, as NASCAR presents a steep learning curve."
During the media briefing, Ganassi was repeatedly pressed to confirm whether Indianapolis 500 winner Dario Franchitti will join his Nextel Cup team for the 2008 season.
"We are trying to get Dario (Franchitti) in there but there are still a few hurdles to be addressed before an announcement can be made," Ganassi said. "We are confident that we are going to be able to put something together for him. If it happens, it will be work in progress and we will constantly have to adjust and re-adjust. Dario definitely wants to come and he is a candidate for our team next year."
Ganassi underscored the interest in NASCAR from drivers outside the series and from corporate sponsors. "The fans, the corporations, the media and others are interested," he added. "I still say no matter who you have in your car you are still going to have that guy pop out that no one was looking for. As car owners, we are all looking for that diamond in the rough -- the driver who will take us to the Promised Land."
The veteran owner said when drivers move into NASCAR it does not damage their previous series. "NASCAR is where the action is and the Indy Racing League will be fine. Drivers come and go in a series but it is the series that endures."
Ganassi stated it didn't matter to him whether a driver is from Columbia, South Carolina or Columbia, South America. "You are looking for drivers that can win races."
Regarding driver Dan Weldon, Ganassi stated that he expects the Indy 500 champion to stay where he is for a while. "We have talked it over with Dan, and he's fine where he is for the next couple of years. Dan has not been pushed off to the side, and I am happy as long as he is happy."
Ganassi said that if Franchitti does make the change, he will not be bringing sponsorship with him. And, moreover, a driver has never bought a ride in a Ganassi- owned car. Addressing his enthusiasm for signing Franchitti, he said, "It is not because Dario is an open wheel driver, a champion or an Indy 500 champion. Dario has a high level of maturity and he's looking to go to the next step in his career. The guy has a very strong resume."
Regarding the Grand-Am finale at Miller Motors ports Park, Ganassi said he did not protest the finish because of the late-race penalty assessed on driver Scott Pruett.
"We didn't protest. You don't win championships or lose them in one race. You win championships over a whole season. The guys that won the championship deserved to win it."
